In the heart of Leixlip village on Captain's Hill is Leixlip House Hotel. A British Army Captain William Brady built the house in 1772. The Captain's Hill was originally called Priest's Lane but was renamed after Brady. He passed away in 1800 and the house went to his daughter, Mrs. Jane Nesbitt who had married into the Nesbitt family. The house remained with them until the death of Catherine Downing Nesbitt in 1870.
In 1924 the house was occupied by Captain Hone a British Army officer who had served in India. He was a brother of Evie Hone, the world famous stained glass artist. It was subsequently owned by Mr. Watchman, Major Holt and Colonel Nugent Head.
1966 saw Captain Carville taking over ownership. He did a lot of renovations and refurbishments to the house. One of his notable improvements was the erection of the gates and railings that face onto the hill. These replaced the old wooden gates that were formerly at the French Estates in Frenchpark, Co.Rosscommon.
The House was destroyed by fire in July 1985, but was beautifully restored and refurbished. Many of its original features and splendour were retained. It is is now a luxurious four star hotel.
